Captain Andy O’Shea brings a wealth of experience from his 28-year career at Ryanair, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the airline’s training and safety standards. For 18 years, he served as the Head of Training, during which time he was also the Deputy Chief Pilot – Flight Standards. In this role, Andy was instrumental in maintaining the high operational standards that have defined Ryanair’s growth and success.

During his tenure, Andy oversaw Ryanair’s exponential growth from a fleet of 26 aircraft to over 460, making Ryanair one of the largest airlines in Europe. His leadership was critical in ensuring that pilot training kept pace with the safe and rapid expansion of the airline’s fleet and operational needs. Under his direction, Ryanair’s Approved Training Organisation (ATO) managed the pilot training of over 10,000 low-time pilots, guiding them through the B737 type rating. This rigorous training program produced pilots with a high level of skill and professionalism, contributing to Ryanair’s reputation for efficiency and safety, and their own ability to enjoy a varied airline pilot career in multiple well-known airlines.

Beyond his work at Ryanair, Andy O’Shea made significant contributions to European aviation training standards through his work with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). He chaired the EASA Aircrew Training Policy Group, where he played a leading role in shaping regulatory policies that ensure high standards for pilot training across Europe. Notably, he was instrumental in developing the Airline Pilot Standard Multicrew Coordination training (APS MCC), which set a new benchmark for multicrew coordination training. This enhanced MCC course is designed to improve the readiness of pilots transitioning to airline operations. The APS MCC program, now widely recognized and adopted, focuses on bridging the gap between theoretical training and real-world airline environments, enhancing the skill set of newly qualified pilots.

Course Syllabus

The APC Pilot Mentored Program offered by AELO Swiss Academy is a specialized pathway designed to complement the standard ATPL Integrated course, providing students with an enhanced, competency-focused training experience that prepares them for a seamless transition into an airline career. This program integrates advanced mentorship and continuous evaluation, ensuring that students not only meet the standard requirements but also develop competencies that are highly valued by airlines, especially those partnered with APC (Airline Pilot Careers).

The APC syllabus includes several phases, which work in tandem with the AELO ATPL Integrated syllabus to provide a comprehensive training pathway:

Phase 1: Initial Assessment and Baseline Establishment

During the initial phase, students undergo in-depth psychometric assessments using tools such as AON and Symbiotics to analyze potential pilot competencies. The data from these assessments are transferred into the Amelia.2 system, a dynamic learning platform that tracks student progress. This phase also includes a competency-based interview with APC subject matter experts, followed by the creation of a detailed baseline report that outlines the student’s strengths, areas for development, and tailored training methods. The insights from this report guide the personalized training approach throughout the course.

Phase 2: Training and Ongoing Data Collection

As students progress through the ATPL Integrated course, continuous data collection feeds into Amelia.2, ensuring that all training events, from theory exam results to flight training records (CPL/ME/IR), are carefully monitored. This phase also includes regular review meetings with the APC team, offering additional support and guidance to ensure that students stay on track with their development.

Phase 3: Continuous Resilience Development Programme (CRD)

The program emphasizes resilience development through scenario-based training (SBT) and coaching. Special attention is given to preparing students for the APS MCC phase, where key competencies such as multi-crew coordination, decision-making, and resilience under pressure are refined. APC experts provide observation and debriefing sessions during the APS MCC, ensuring that students receive airline-specific feedback to enhance their readiness for airline operations.

Phase 4: Airline-Ready Pilot Pool (ARPP)

Upon completion of the course, students automatically enter the APC Airline-Ready Pilot Pool (ARPP). This phase offers post-graduation support, including CV and interview preparation, along with personalized career guidance. Graduates benefit from continued mentorship as they transition into airline roles, ensuring that they are well-prepared to meet the demands of their first airline job.
